Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “petrichor” as, “a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period.” Painting from a reference photo taken in northern Oregon, the artist depicts hazy grey skies and a muddled, muddy foreground to convey the often rain-soaked landscape of the environment there. Ruminating on the title and studying the dense, wild, wet forest, the viewer can conjure the scent of fresh rain and invoke the sense of calm it accompanies.
