Named for the medicinal healers called shamans and alluding to the healing power of nature’s flora, the “Shaman” painting combines landscapes with surreal structures in a meditation on human development and destruction. Featuring seaside bluffs of Santa Barbara with the Santa Ynez Mountains radiating hues of sky blue and lavender in the background, the painter was inspired by native foliage, its foundational role in ecological systems, and what happens when these plants are eliminated due to climate change disasters. Framed with white mid-century modern beams, the artist harkened the architectural home styles prevalent in California while representing the critical structures these plants embody and enable.
